The nizonide 500mg, containing the active ingredient nitazoxanide, is an antiparasitic and antiviral medication that works against Trichomonas vaginalis, the parasite causing trichomoniasis. It inhibits pyruvate oxidoreductase (PFOR), an enzyme essential for the parasite’s energy metabolism and survival. By disrupting this enzyme, nitazoxanide impairs the parasite’s ability to generate energy, leading to its death. Though commonly used for protozoal infections like cryptosporidiosis, its use in trichomoniasis may be considered off-label or as part of combination therapy when first-line treatments, such as metronidazole or tinidazole, are ineffective or contraindicated. Consult a healthcare provider for appropriate usage.
